I don't know if this is relevant but, have you updated the firmware?

Answer was no, but after updating the performance is still patchy - for example
it
hung on the second call I made. This could be down to hardware variance in
timings?

strange... I also use cupcake 0.2.0 RC1 and frequently reboot by shutting down
and then turning the device back on using the power button. It comes up with a
locked screen, instead of the operator name I get "SIM card is locked. Press
Menu to unlock.". I press POWER and get the PIN entry screen. I enter my SIM
PIN and it connects to the GSM network. Is your SIM pin-protected? Maybe that
makes a difference...

About WiFi I'm not 100% sure as I use it only sporadically, enabling it
manually when I need it, and it gets disabled anyway when the phone goes to
sleep.
