Not sure what you mean exactly, but for the volumetric rendering using textures, you basically need a "sliced cube" (a lot of quads stacked next to each other). If you mess with this it might look really cool though. Keep me posted if you get some results with this.
Wondering if replacing the quad mesh with something else is possible by changing the vertex locations or the system is reliant on a cube array. Will play around but would like your input.
