What I wanted, was the EXTERNAL LINK symbol. I could not get it working, but you might have more possibilities through the plugin.
From the fonts that support this character U+F045, only PragmataPro Liga Regular shows the desired symbol:

Proposal
Having a Config page option to define such a link:
with a resonable Default (like the current definition), that a user can easily go back to (restore default button, with an explanation which is default it is reverting to, before pressing it)
Edit field to change the default to something like the above using the zotero variables (as used in the translators).
