Allow `calc_rate` objects as the `by` in `adjust_rate`? #172

The more i think about this the more it seems like an artificial limitation. calc_rate is such a useful general utility function for getting a quick rate. No need to deprecate calc_rate.bg which still has its uses, but no reason either can't be used.
