You're off by about a decade and a half :)

It looks like the side-by-side tutorial layout was introduced in 2013. At that point, I don't think there was a reasonable alternative for this kind of layout (a grid with equal-height cells in each row) if you wanted wide browser support. Flexbox support was spotty at best, and display: table-* didn't work in IE 6 or 7. Maybe there was another way to do it, but I've fortunately recycled a lot of the brain cells that were responsible for knowing how to do things in IE 6.
