Rework stringification #2

Switch to outputing to a stream as the default
Stringify then just becomes a with-output-to-string on the output
Newline should be translated at the stream layer
Fix floating-point output

@charJe let me know if you have any strong opinions on these changes

I don't really understand the preference of streams over strings (I guess more effecient?), but still looks good to me 🐱. I can try to make some tests tomorrow if you're not in any rush.
