I am trying to do this using Homebrew http://mxcl.github.com/homebrew/ on OSX 10.7.1 but getting stuck at the client_avahi dependency. There is a formula for mt-daapd that works but I believe this breaks with newer versions of iTunes.
Can this be successfully built on an OSX server?
