Incorrect plane heading shown on the ardupilot mega misson planner

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.Ardupilot mega is setup according to the manual.
2.The plane setup with the HMC5843 magnetometer and the mediatek gps
3.I have set the magnetic declination in the hardware setup.
4.The plane is able to fly in manual and stabilize mode but the heading of the 
plane shown is incorrect.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
The heading is offset about 15 to 20 degrees lower in the flight data.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
APM Planner 1.0.65
Ardupilot mega board V2

Please provide any additional information below.
The stabilization mode works but i am unsure wheather the RTL mode will work if 
the heading is incorrect. so i haven tested the RTL mode.

is your mag enabled?
has it been flown a little to calibrate and to set the mag offsets?

I have already enabled my magnetometer and set declination in hardware setup
I have test flown the plane in stabilize mode but i am not sure of how to 
calibrate and set mag offsets

just flying the plane sets up the offsets.
