n56u - cannot get enough speed on lan (nor wifi) #1066

Hi there,

has anyone tried the router on gigabit ports?
i recently got a gigabit internet, and i cannot get the router to work over 
140mb/s on cable. while when i try the cable directly into the pc, i get 
680mb/s. on a stock firmware i was able to get 380. but these are far from the 
gigabit speed.

can anyone help me? maybe it's a setting? the ports are set to 1000mb/s.
also on wifi, when i'm near the router, i cannot get more than 110mb/s.

note : yes, i have a gigabit eth port on the pc and yes, i have a fast ssd.

nope, i'm sure. i'm using the same speedtest from my local provider. on the 
wire directly goes with 680-700, but with the router only 380.

what firmware do you have? also maybe you could post the settings? I also have 
an edimax gigabit router and interesting, i have the same situation, around 350 
max.

Shit sorry accidentally deleted my comment. I build my own from source, pretty 
lean though. Its basically stock 3.4.3.7-072 w.o. QoS-support. I have to ssh to 
my buildbox, i'll post my settings here in a bit.

What speeds are you getting if you're just transferring through the Edimax 
router?

Sure you aren't mixing up byte and bit?

I'm getting approx 117 MB/s which equals to 981 Mbps. Pretty darn near wire 
speed.

Also, what output do you get if you issue "rtl8367 20" from Administration -> 
Console?

thx. i appreciate the help. i really like this router, it's stable (with this 
firmware) and have very good wireless signal strength.

to answer you question, i get similar speed with the edimax router. 350 mb.
i've tried multiple cables (stock from asus and edimax) both cat5e. don't think 
it's that. 

and the output from "rtl8367 20" - i got "WAN port link: 1000 FD"
(i have also the latest firmware : 3.4.3.7-072)

ok that's 1000 Mbps @ full duplex.

Settings wise, I wont bore you with everything but rather what might be 
performance related.

LAN - IPTV:
Multicast routing: Disabled. Everything IGMP-snooping/MC-related is disabled in 
my LAN.
Multicast Traffic - Ethernet Switch: Disabled.
Multicast Traffic - WiFi 2.4GHz: Disabled.
Multicast Traffic - WiFi 5GHz: Disabled.

Ethernet Switch:
Accept Jumbo frames Between Ports: 16000 bytes
Enable Green Ethernet: No. Derp.
 WAN
 Flow Control: Disabled.
 Speed and Duplex: Auto
 For all LAN-ports I've enabled flow control, RX/TX with auto negotiation.

WAN - Internet Connection:
Enable NAT: Yes.
Hardware offload NAT/Routing IPv4: Offload TCP/UDP for LAN/WAN.

You might also wanna check Firewall - Netfilter. Just make sure it's HW 
accelerated (HW_NAT FoE Max), shouldn't affect performance _THAT_ much, but 
still.

tried these tonight. unfortunately it's the same. actually i was writing things 
wrong.
i can get 380 speed with the stock asus firmware. with this custom firmware 
around 300 only.

all the settings you've wrote are set. but cannot get the desired speed :(

Well, i wouldn't recommend it since I don't think this poor guy could handle 
the I/O..

I suppose you could try something like "wget -O /dev/null  
http://ftp.ds.karen.hj.se/ubuntu-releases//precise/ubuntu-12.04.3-desktop-amd64.
iso".

I'll get back to you on this one.

something more suitable in your country/region.

OK so I've been fiddling with this for some time now, but you wont get sane 
values with this method (speedtest performed on device).

Just for the laughs I've set up an external (yes I have access to some hefty 
networks) server (dd if=/dev/zero of=my_large_file bs=1 count=0 seek=1024M) on 
a 10GE NIC and the results were kinda disappointing.

hey. i'm from romania, so i test with the local providers(RDS) test page : 
http://www.rcs-rds.ro/internet-digi-net/testeaza-ti-viteza

i think the host is : speedtest1.rcs-rds.ro:8080
(taken from the network requests)

Hmm. There are some ISPs that provision certain services/speeds using dhcp 
option 60 (vendor ID -> MAC). Are you perhaps required to use a router/CPE 
provided by your ISP? 

If so you could change the MAC of our beloved asus to match the MAC provided to 
you by your ISP.

Also, you could try lowering your MRU & MTU somewhat, some older or odd 
switches prefer a MTU of 1400.

What kind of speeds are you getting if you only run through the edimax-device?

no, it was back in time (5,6 years ago), but not nowadays as far as i know. I 
will check the other settings. i also got a new system, will test with that as 
well.

i was sad that couldn't get the desired speed, so i decided to sell my n56u and 
buy a new ac66u. i need a faster wifi anyway. hopefully that will work better. 
i'm sad to sell the n56u, because it's very stable with this firmware ... is 
there a similar nice firmware for the ac66u?
i will test the new router on sunday :)

sorry for not getting back yet. so here i am ...
i had the exact same issue with my AC66U, same low speed. then i found 1 
firmware which did the trick, which is the rmerlin beta firmware (nr 29 - 
didn't try the new one).

apparently the asus routers don't like PPPOE and does not perform at their tops 
with this setting. most people say it's the broadcom chip. not sure the n56u 
what chip has, but probably it's the same issue. Though it can be fixed within 
the firmware, as my current one works good and i can achieve 8-900 on my 
gigabit wan.
