Plugging WD MyPassport 0748 on either USB hangs the router #1072

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Plug WD MyPassport 0748 into USB port
2. Access admin interface
3. CPU Load jumps to 75-100% and interface becomes unresponsive
4. Unplug drive and router CPU drops to 0-20%
5. I chkdsk the drive on my PC and then replug into the router; same problem
6. I tried plugging into the other USB port - same problem
7. I down-revved to the standard ASUS firmware and the problem goes away

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
RT-N56U with RT-N56U_3.4.3.7-069 custom firmware

No, I have not loaded and do not use any extra features like dlna or aria. At 
one point I had the "Auto check filesystem on USB storage plug? " option set to 
Yes, but I turned that to No, rebooted the router and still have the same 
hanging problem when I plug the USB drive.
