Currently it is not possible to have an external or a subdomain 
(http://domaincom/slir/c168:100/http://sub.domain.com/image.jpg) in the image 
path. Would be nice if this could be implemented. Or is there a way around the 
issue?

A way around the issue is to run a separate script to cache images from remote 
servers or on another subdomain onto your server or subdomain.
