Purpose

Addresses my portion of #146.

Directions for reviewers

For the most part, these changes are wordsmithing related. The most new stuff I added were the figure legends for 3 and 4, so I would concentrate some of the review on those items specifically. What I did for #147 – and I would recommend you do the same – is I added any suggestions to the diff, approved, committed all the suggestions, merged and then started a new branch.

I've also added some TODOs. I will summarize them on #146 for you @allaway so you have those available to you when you go through.
