Upgrade from 1.35 to 2.8.5 and no images. Revert and images show #329

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Replace version 1.35 script with version 2.8.5

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

Expect to see images/thumbs, but images are missing. There are no generated 
errors.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

Trying to use 2.8.5, upgrading from 1.35. Server is Linux running PHP 4.3.9

Please provide any additional information below.

If I simply replace the 2.8.5 script with the 1.35 script, then all works fine. 
Replace again with 2.8.5 and it's broken again. Thanks for any help.
