App works as normal using Edge #1045

The app appears to work fine as long as you sign in via Edge browser on your phone

No app password or anything needed. Works the same it it does before Google made the change back in July I believe

So this isn't an issue, just didn't see it posted anywhere. If it is, then delete. But I was wondering how using Edge makes it work again

This has been reported in the comments on a few issues, but it's useful to have its own issue so we can discuss and hopefully figure out exactly what mechanisms are involved.

Installing Edge isn't an option for everyone. It's a third-party app, from a company that some people find difficult to trust, with a very long list of requested permissions, some of them quite intrusive.

Curiously, "read and write Gmail" is not one of those permissions, so my feeling is that its ability to confer Gmail access upon SMS Backup+ is a bug in the Android security subsystem, which could get "fixed" without warning.

Or - because Microsoft is big enough to warrant special consideration by Google - it might keep working indefinitely.

If you're already happy in the Microsoft ecosystem, then fine, go ahead and use it, but I would still be prepared for SMS Backup+ to stop working with little or no notice.

If you want to avoid Microsoft, this is not the solution you're looking for.

(Of course, if you want to avoid Google, how to authenticate to their servers is the least of your worries.)

If you're happy to accept a 3rd party app with access to do almost anything to your device, fine, go ahead and use it, but still be prepared for it to stop working.

Um Edge is a 3rd party app yes, but its by MICROSOFT, the leading operating system on computers! and thereby Edge is on millions and millions and millions of computers and phones and tablets!! Ever heard of Bill Gates? If you can't trust Microsoft, not sure why you would trust Google!!!! They are the ones getting all your text messages!!!

I'm not sure why you so concerned with Edges permissions. Its a browser, and uses the same permissions as most other web browsers. But all you have to do is install Edge, sign in, then uninstall Edge. You're paranoid if you think your phone will be compromised by using EDGE from MICROSOFT with the app being on your phone for only 1 minute.

I'm happy to leave this issue as a recommendation for people who are already happy to trust Microsoft, however this is not the place for debate on the merits of Microsoft or Google.

what you fail to realize is that Google is just as much as 3rd party as EDGE!!! This SMS app relies on a 3rd party, GOOGLE!!! it can NOT work without the use of a 3rd party. You don't want to talk about merits , but its ASSUMED you have to trust the 3rd party merits of Google, who will have access to ALL your SMS text mesages, all the time while EDGE will only have it for about the 10 seconds it takes to log in, smh
