What version are you running? f-droid has a much newer version https://f-droid.org/packages/com.zegoggles.smssync/
I downloaded the play store version a couple days ago, I'd have to reboot my LG to check for sure. Is the link yoiu sent different? I'm not great at github haha
Not the Play store version, the sms-backup-plus version.
Yes, you can try 1.5.11-beta7 - you'll have to install f-droid first.
I've seen comments suggesting advanced messaging is the issue, but I can't seem to find where that exists in my settings. Do you think that could be my issue? I'll try the f-droid version too
The 1.5.11-beta7 still has the same issue unfortunately.
@jberkel fyi
I'm restoring from an LG Phoenix 3 to the Samsung Galaxy S8
to clarify, is this happening when they are backed up, or in the restore?
there's a Sync log setting in Advanced settings that could also help - see https://github.com/jberkel/sms-backup-plus#i-want-to-file-a-bug-report-what-should-i-do
I'd expect a bug like this to have been reported before
@sec89 do you use some other apps to send messages? e.g. Signal / Hangouts?
@jberkel for sms messages I've only used the default message app. I don't remember having trouble with the samsung default app, though its been a while since I've backed up my messages onto a new phone. I noticed this issue when transferring from my LG Phoenix 3, on which I used the default app. I cannot find any setting to turn off "advanced messaging," either, as other threads have suggested to do, so I'm not sure that issue is applicable here.
@jberkel @jcrben As a clarification, I just saw your note, ben. I see this issue during backup. Before restoring, I confirmed the contents of the gmail backup, and the gmail backup itself was missing my replies. However, all messages that were backed up, restored correctly on the phone.
You say it's a "seemingly random collection" of messages missing. That is quite weird. See if you can find some sort of pattern for the missing messages (length, multiple recipients, etc.)
I can't seem to find a pattern. There are a variety of lengths of the texts, some work with emojis, some days have one reply backed up, other days have a couple. There aren't recipients that seem more affected than others. I did try backing up multiple time with different labels in my gmail, and the same replies are getting backed up each time, so there is something specific about the backed up replies that allow them to get saved, I'd assume. Are there any patterns I should be looking for specifically?

What I sometimes observed is that Gmail's threading was out of control and messages got re-grouped in a totally different thread. So all the messages were there, just hidden somewhere.
What I then recommended was to check your email with a "normal" IMAP client, just as a sanity check. Have you tried this?
What do you mean by a "normal" IMAP client? How can I do that?
The only trend I "may" have uncovered is that it seems more rampant with iPhone recipients. Like maybe the messages that were saved weren't received as iMessage?
I agree that the gmail threading is a little insane, I'm not sure how to sort through all of it, as I did (in segments) attempt to back up a large volume of texts.

When restored on the phone, the messages missing on gmail reflected the missing messages on my phone after restore.

What do you mean by a "normal" IMAP client? How can I do that?
A normal IMAP client you install on your desktop, e.g. https://www.mozilla.org/en/thunderbird/ With the rise of the web clients these have fallen a bit out of fashion.
When restored on the phone, the messages missing on gmail reflected the missing messages on my phone after restore.
OK, then it's probably not threading. Not sure what else to suggest at this point.
Thank you for trying.

No problem! I'm leaving this issue open, maybe somebody else has an idea.
When backing up messages, only a seemingly random collection of my responses are saved, though it seems that all received text messages are saved. I love your app and am so sad to find that this is happening, are you able to fix it?
