Google IMAP error fixed on Android #972

Open Shackledup opened 4 years ago

Shackledup commented 4 years ago

The IMAP access error is due to a change in Google's App security - I had a notification that SMS Backup+ wouldn't work after a certain date explaining this.

Solving it is easy.

Create an App specific password in your Google account: Go to your Google account, select Security from the left menu, select App Passwords in the Signing in to Google box.

At the bottom of the list select the Select app drop down menu - SMS Backup+ won't be there, so select Other.

Type SMS Backup+ in the field and click generate. You'll get a 16 character password.

Now open SMS Backup+ (it's easier if you have the password open on a different device, or maybe write it down if you're doing all of this on the same device.

In SMS Backup+ go to Advanced Settings/Custom IMAP server

Tap Authentication at the top and change it to Plain Text.

Leave the server address as imap.gmail.com:993

Enter your email address.

Enter the app password you generated WITHOUT the spaces.

Make sure Security is on TLS.

You're done, go back to the main SMS Backup+ screen and it should work. Does for me.

I have done all the instructions including 2 step verification and have entered my gmail email address And used the16 digit password that was generated, but get an error When trying to start backup saying IMAP authorization error. Make sure login and password are set correctly? Can someone help? I sure would like to get this backup app working again. Thanks

IMAP option in Gmail must be activated. Repeat

Still working with gmail:

Make sure IMAP is enabled on your account Create an App password Under Custom IMAP server input imap.gmail.com:993 (empty didn't work for me) enter your email as the username, and the just created app password as password Security is TLS

Backup should now be working If you are using an old app password, try to create a new one (and remember to only enter the 16 letters, not the spaces)

NikiZe, Thanks for your reply. All info I had input was correct. When I first Created a 16 digit password it didn’t work. Today I deleted the password and created a new one, and it is working now. Go figure? Thanks so much for your help... All The Best

ERROR: " IMAP authorization error. Make sure login and password are set correctly" I am having exact same issues as captng1 and have followed steps numerous times. Have used this app for years and love it. I just got a new phone (Galaxy 20+). Set it up two days ago and it worked then, but it has not backed up since that initial run and cannot get it to work again. And yes, IMAP is enabled. Two step auth is set. Generated password (5 times now) Typed it in with no spaces. Tried my email address/ user name both with and without "@gmail.com" Made sure Security is TLS. Like I said, it worked a few days ago on initial run.

Also tried clearing cache of app. Tried battery optimizer both on and off. Tried with phone plugged in and not.

Do I need to uninstall it from my old phone (no longer has a SIM card)? Could that be the issue?

Tried this too:

Still having trouble signing in? If you still can’t sign in to your account on the app, try the following:

On your device’s browser, go to https://accounts.google.com/DisplayUnlockCaptcha. Enter your username and password, then enter the letters on the screen. Go back to the app and try signing in again.

What, for heaven's sake, am missing? Thanks in advance.

@Shackledup

Thank you for this great guide!

I'll add 2 things that I had to find:

I really do hate to say this, but the app still fails to operate automatically, as it should, but rather must be started manually. It seems to work as expected once started, just the scheduler appears to be nonfunctional. It worked fine when I first started using it several years ago, but hasn't in quite some time.

adgorn commented 2 months ago

That's what I do. Run it manually once per month. That's fine for me.
