Requesting Replication Code #1

Hi Jack,

I’m a PhD candidate in political science at Washington University in St. Louis, working with Diana O’Brien and Margit Tavits. I’m researching legislative speech by LGBT MPs and would like to update your dataset to cover the years 1976-2024.

Could you share the replication code for your project? In return, I’d be happy to share the expanded dataset with you, and I'll certainly cite your work in any publications that come out of this project.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Best, Patrick

Hi Patrick,

Thanks for this and apologies for the delayed response.

I can have a look to see if there are scripts that would be useful for me to share, but I suspect they will by now be horrendously out of date as I completed work on this project back in 2017. I’d be surprised if any of the APIs that I used are still functional (or, at least, they are likely to have changed substantively since I used them). If it is the speech data that you are after, I believe that the relevant API to use now would be this onehttps://docs.evanodell.com/hansard/. From memory, I used the TheyWorkForYou APIhttps://www.theyworkforyou.com/api/, which I then supplemented with manual data collection for the ministerial roles.

Let me know if it would be helpful for me to dig through my files and I’ll take a look.

More broadly, your project sounds super interesting!

Thanks,

Hi Jack,

Thanks for your reply! I've already obtained the 2019-2024 parliamentary speech data through your twfyR package and the TheyWorkForYou API, so no need to worry about that. I can send you the updated dataset if you’d like.

Could you please send me the scripts you used to access and merge the non-speech data, specifically:

Even if I need to update the code for R or API changes, having your scripts would save me time compared to reverse-engineering the dataset. They’ll also help ensure I follow a standardized coding process when adding this data to my own dataset.

Let me know if you need more details.

Thank you!

Patrick
