refactor serialization and deserialization methods and interfaces #5

(And also the ComplexType.initialize method, following implementation of #2.)

The whole suite of methods is starting to look a bit cobbled together. Improvements should include:

named parameters
consistent method signatures
verification of the algorithms (I'm not convinced the initialize method is quite correct yet)
a tidy of the variables introduced in these methods, and better structure to code branches within them
