detection files showing ?proj?-120 rather than name #96

Is it an issue that Lotek tag 120 (motus tag ID 23288) is showing up as ?proj?−120#29:9.7 M.23288 in the detection file? It's a significant movement for that bird so Susan Heath wants to make sure it's correct.

I'm going to rerun that receiver. The "?proj?" indicates that for some reason, no project can be found to match a tag detection. That means, the particular tag was detected at some point, but the deployment info for that tag no longer includes the period during which it was dtected.

Those detections in particular are a couple of days before the deployment date listed on motus.org for that tag.

Generally that shouldn't happen, as we only look for tags when we think they've been deployed, but here's how it can happen:

  1. the tag is registered with a provisional deployment date

  2. data from after that provisional deployment date are run, and the tag is detected; perhaps the tag is active in a pouch or during registration.

  3. a true tag deployment date, later than the provisional one, is entered at motus.org

  4. additional data from the receiver in step 2 are processed; the processing is incremental, so the detections of the tag from step 2 are still in the database

  5. the summary receiver plot is generated; this grabs the detections from steps 2 and 4, but when labelling the plot, no appropriate deployment can be found for the detections from step 2, because the deployment date now available from motus.org is after those detections

We'll be formalizing procedures to deal with this kind of situation, where data already run might no longer be valid due to changes in metadata.

Anyway, rerunning that receiver removed the tag detections in question. Seems that it was active on March 28, but that must have been in someone's bag heading for the field, and passing by a station, or something like that.
