I used one of these step-up converters mainly because the circuit is enclosed. I cut both ends and join them with a terminal block connector. I did have to cut the Echo Dot power supply cable as the pins I had didn't fit.

Job done.
I want to install an Echo Dot in the hall for TTS announcements. In time I may replace this with a Sonos Move. The trouble is I have limited plugs in my hall. I've trailed a wire around the room to provide power for my doorbell as well as my air freshener #151.
The 3rd Gen Echo Dot runs on 12V with the centre pin being hot. My air freshener is powered by 5V USB so with the help of a step-up converter I should be able to power both the air freshener and the Echo Dot.
