I wanted to report back to this issue. Firstly, thank you for the analysis of the situation, it got me into an area where I think there's a decent fix.

I almost went crazy trying to find the cause. Thanks for your description!! I pulled a cable from the power connector (CAN / VCC) on the board to a fastening screw on the extruder motor. So far it's working.
