I would like to have something, when the application is up and running, to 
see what version I am using.

I'm sure a few other items could be added as well, such as a link to this 
project site.

Right click, "About...". (If you've set right click to do something other than 
show
the menu, Shift+Right click or the menu key will pop up the context menu.)
