@jdarling is there any specific reason why this change does not get merged in?

It is in testing currently. Once I validate it doesn't break existing test cases I'll merge it.

Hand merging this and some other changes today. Hopefully will publish in a few hours. This should fix all open issues once merged and pushed.

These should now be merged and updated slightly for safe default to true.
