With the RPi HQ cam I have found that it is slightly off in alignment... the c-cs adapter is either too short or too tall (if using 2). The RPi adapter (cyclinder ridges) is also not great... where it works either close or far... but not both.
For the ML Hat Cam I was using the Arducam IMX477 and it worked as expected close and far
The 8-50mm works best with the Arducam IMX477
