I think this is because getting frozen ends your turn immediately which clears the sprite. Similar to the reported bug of killing an entire map in one spell moving immediately to the next level before showing the result of the spell
Multiplayer, 2 players frozen:
I destroyed an ice urn to freeze the not-frozen player, thus ending the player turn phase. There was an existing freeze image on Player 2 that should've been removed when the turn ended, but was not, and the ice urn didn't play its explosion vfx or apply the freeze image to nearby units. All issues were purely visual, and the freeze modifiers were added/removed as expected.
