I have tested this change locally by running jekyll according to these instructions: https://help.github.com/articles/setting-up-your-github-pages-site-locally-with-jekyll/
I've copied over the content of README.md into index and then removed everything after the configuration section in the readme and I replaced the first section inside index.md with an include to the readme.d to elminate unnecessary duplication.
