Use the threshold value of the previous calculated pixel.... As an memory function loop input and output
Maybe it's wise to segment the fore- / background using conventional OTSU thresholding method and use this and starting point
Jochem you seemed interested in tackling this problem. Just one of the ideas I had but didn't have time to follow through on. (Don't feel obliged, this is just me trying out some github functionality)
In matlab I noticed a grouping when the chromatic value a and b (CIE Lab) when set against each other. When I removed the background and made the same graph with just the particle a region of ab values that was clearly defined was removed. Maybe this is something to be explored
Neural network where the input is the chromatic a and b of the current pixel and neighbors (maybe described as statistics) the network is learned by letting the user mark the particles... And letting that be the outcome.
