LibVLC playback is slow to start up compared to Exoplayer #2341

Describe the bug

  1. Select LibVLC as default player in settings
  2. Try to play back any content (AVC, HEVC, 1080p, 4k, doesn't matter)
  3. Observe significantly delay (I measured 13 seconds on a Shield TV Pro)

This is compared to Exoplayer playing back near instantaneously. I'm not on the local network of my server. My latency to the server is about 65ms. However network throughput is excellent, and even on 80-90 Mbps files playback is fine with no buffering. This seems unrelated to latency or network throughput given the issue doesn't exhibit itself with Exoplayer. This is direct playing, no transcoding. Persists on app reinstall fresh from the play store.

Logs

This isn't a crash and as far as I cant tell there's nothing in the server logs to indicate an issue there. Still, here are the time stamps that seem to be associated with the server processing the request. Removed info since I'm not sure how much of this is sensitive. The last line is 20 seconds after the start, since I didn't observe that big of a delay I don't believe it to be related to the issue.

We can't help without client logs. We also don't recommend using the LibVLC implementation (it's off by default for a reason).

Client logs below from logcat. Sorry for the huge dump, I guess a lot happens in 15 seconds. As for LibVLC vs Exoplayer, while exoplayer works really well 90% of the time, every now and then I run into an issue that is simply solved by using LibVLC. The most recent example of this is stuttery playback on interlaced content with Exoplayer that LibVLC handles like a champ. In the past I've had subtitle issues and files refusing to play issues (though not recently) that have kept me from keeping Exoplayer on all the time.
