In the app preferences, go to playback then set "Audio output" to "Direct". It defaults to "Downmix to stereo", which will force transcoding for a lot of audio codecs.

Even transcoding crashes

This workaroud worked for me
Changing back the audio setting to direct (this was my preference before but was changed with the update to 17.0.0) solved the problem for me, too.
I'll change the default to direct stream instead of downmix for the next release.
Yes but why would suddenly transcoding become a problem?
In 0.17 the default audio behavior changed to "downmix to stereo" which disables most audio codecs, causing a remux/transcode.
I do understand that it causes transcoding. But why is it a problem? Why does the application crash when transcoding?
My chromecast HD (another device, not this one I reported the problem with) is useless for watching any 4K movie because it A) crashes when transcoding or B) transcoding is "so slow" that it is unwatchable.
All while i can transcode a 4K video to 3 laptops in HD with ease (i did a test)
so why is transcoding so bad on android app?
You didn't share any crash reports so I assumed you just meant playback failed instead of the app crashing. If the app crashes that's indeed a problem, please share the crash report so we can look into it.
*sorry I may have been to harsh with my words.
I meant playback failed.
But why does it fail when transcoded?
This is my third repeated question and it is a bit weird that I don't get even a basic response sorry.
@tdeboss I think, you misunderstand the transcoding. It's not done in the client app, it's done on the server. So, probably your server is not sufficient for 4k transcoding. Transcoding is a nice feature, but requires a lot power on the server.
Describe the bug
Everything was Ok untill today. I watched the same movie on Saturday evening and everything was Ok. I tried with at least a half dozen movies and there is always the same problem. Audio codecs can be different, but the Video codec is HEVC 4K 10bit with DoVi.
