EAC3 is transcoded on iOS when unnecessary #2262

Describe The Bug On my iOS device (iPhone X, iOS 14.3), EAC3 audio is transcoded during playback even though EAC3 should be supported. After going to the user settings and disabling “Allow audio playback that requires transcoding”, the video plays as expected with the playback data showing “EAC3 (direct)”.

This issue is present on both the stable release (10.6.4) and the most recent unstable build.

Steps To Reproduce

  1. Open Jellyfin on an iOS device
  2. Play a video with EAC3 audio
  3. Check playback data to find that the audio is being transcoded (to AC3 in the 10.6.4 build, to AAC in the unstable build)

Expected Behavior The EAC3 audio plays directly without transcoding

I don't have an iPhone, is it possible to get server logs for this activity? It will let us see the decisionmaking of the server

Will be fixed in JF 10.7 with iOS client 1.3.0. Make sure your EAC3 audio stream has a valid bitrate info, otherwise it will get transcoded.

It does look like the missing audio bitrate is what’s causing the transcoding. After I refreshed the metadata for the file and the bitrate had been added to the media info, the audio played directly with audio transcoding turned on. Ideally it would play directly even without the audio bitrate being detected prior, but I know I’m biased by not wanting to go through and refresh the metadata for all my files, and I can see how ignoring the missing media info might cause problems down the line. Anyway, thanks for getting eac3 working with 10.7! Spatial audio for AirPods requires the original ac3 or eac3 stream, so it’s pretty cool having that work with Jellyfin.

I’ve attached logs for the 3 scenarios (audio transcoding off + missing eac3 bitrate, audio transcoding on + missing eac3 bitrate, audio transcoding on + eac3 bitrate present).

It seema metadata will needed to be refreshed on two accounts, EAC audio and HDR for video. I think we can close this and part of the 10.7 release notes ensure people understand this.
