1 - Mind trying clicking on the play icon. 2 - The playback error either means what it means or might be related to this https://www.reddit.com/r/jellyfin/comments/wgngwv/1083_playback_issues/ but you're running 10.8.1 so probably not.
Since these are mp3's then it's not a codec support issue. Since most browsers support mp3 by default. Did you recently update to 10.8.3? If so, it might be this jellyfin/jellyfin#8233. Did it ever work? or is this a fresh install?

I did not update, no. This is a installment I made recently and I did change nothing after the initial scan. However, since I have this issue I tried to clear cache and stuff, but to no help. Playing in directory view never worked for me and the search is kind of incoherent for me, too.
Does it work using other clients? i.e. Smartphone, tablet, TV.

iPhone 11: fail iPad pro : fail Windows laptop: fail

Still the same issue on Version: 10.8.8
. Expecting folder view to list all files and folders, and attempting to play them back if tried. Even if filenames do not match the file naming scheme or formats are unsupported.

any news?
I don't think there have been any changes to this. Can you describe what you are experiencing? The videos seem to be doing several different things so perhaps there are multiple issues here? Thanks!

The issue is that Jellyfin requires a certain structure, including the tags of the file itself to be to it's liking. Only if I go into the file view, that does no longer matter and I can play back file by file. Jellyfin is too opinionated. Especially for Music that wouldn't be on a public music tag archive.
It is overall - similar to Kodi, but with a key difference! In Kodi, you can name your files within the TheTVDB format, and it will be properly recognized, most of the time.
If I specify folder-view in Jellyfin, I expect the files to be shown as they are, and when I try to play back a file, it should resolve into the absolute and correct filepath. Not something that is relying on tags. All files are present, but Jellyfin does not use their proper location if that makes sense.
The result is, that jellyfin tries to playback a non-existant file, which is a flaw in the logic
The video above does illustrate this well.
Moreover, Jellyfin should have full shift_jis support [...]
So you want the folder view to essentially function like a file browser?

I'd like the folder-view
to display as they are on disk.
If we have the option to display like a file browser would, that would be okay, as well.
But in any case, there should be a clear indication to the user if that is not the case. Because then, we would get reports of a file not being playable, because the path is incorrect. But that user doesn't know, so Jellyfin folks start assuming browser is wrong and they need to clear cache etc.
As a user, when I 'scan' my library, I do expect Jellyfin to add everything that can be played back, and when I enable folder-view, I'd like to see all files that can be played back, within the folders of my structure.
Sounds like this feature request.
