Is unix:// protocol supported? #47

Open rlogiacco opened 5 years ago

rlogiacco commented 5 years ago

I have tried to specify the swarm host in the form unix:///var/run/docker.sock and I obviously am running Jenkins inside a container having the docker unix socket propoerly mounted (it is capable to span new containers), but I'm getting an error back:

java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: unexpected url: unix:///var/run/docker.sock/_ping

The contextual help in the Jenkins configuration reports it should be supported, but may be it isn't yet?

Roemer commented 5 years ago

Do you have a more detailed stacktrace? I've never tried it as I usually use http to interact with the swarm. I suspect it is won't work as it pretty much relies on http calls (see ApiRequest.java). The help is from the standard docker plugin which obviously supports that.

rlogiacco commented 5 years ago

Well, your answer explains why I was also getting an error trying to use the tcp:// protocol ... Here is the full stacktrace.

Yep pretty much only http works. Spawning services would probably work without http but the whole swarm dashboard and such only works with http.

Roemer commented 5 years ago

Are you for sure using the newer Docker Swarm mode and not the Standalone Swarm?

Roemer commented 5 years ago

The way the plugin is build only http/https is possible. I will try to adjust the field. I also need to verify how https can be used and what type of credentials that are needed (some info here: https://docs.docker.com/engine/security/https/)

Roemer commented 5 years ago

It looks like the security is the same as with any default docker socket. So all the basics that are already there should be used. I could not find out how to override a help text from someone else (docker-commons), I might just try to validate that field to make sure it only contains http or https.

rlogiacco commented 5 years ago

I found a good solution around this: instead of publishing the docker API on the host, I used a container (iamge is tecnativa/docker-socket-proxy) to proxy HTTP onto the unix socket, with such container visible only to the jenkins container. This solution exposes the docker API only onto a private network, which was my main concern pushing toward the use of the unix socket from the beginning.

Let me now if you want more details in case you want to document such approach for other users.

From my point of view this issue can be closed.

Great to hear that you found a solution. Would you be able to write a very short tutorial on how to do this? I can then add this to the readme/wiki.
