I'd like to go through the introduction of several of HTML's historical features and showcase the best newsgroup and mailing-list fights that got them where they are today. I'll cover failed proposals, as well as read emails from lots of angry dudes.

I probably won't do this research fully unless the talk is accepted, but some leads are:

• Wilto and the horrible, no good, very bad picture element
• The introduction of CSS
• The best Hixie replies
• People who were ahead of their time (failed proposals that were then accepted by someone else years later)
• The worst ideas and assumptions from 2000
