In case this helps others transcribing, I'm using "Swift Player" on an iPad mini sitting flat next to my Macbook's keyboard. The audio playback can be controlled with tap and swipe gestures and I type on the Macbook, so my hands don't have to move too far between devices to progress through the transcription. I tried a few different Mac apps that are designed for transcription but I didn't get on with them too well. YMMV.
Ooo, looks nice! I've been using VLC and alt-tabbing back and forth between it and word. Some useful commands:
cmd
+
/ -
speeds up and slows down playbackcmd
option
←
/ →
skips ten secondscmd
ctrl
←
/ →
skips three secondsAlso, I tried using OSX's built in dictation functionality (with the "enhanced" option enabled so that it's not sending all the audio over the net to apple's servers and sending text back) with headphones into a mic, then correcting the input, but that went terribly. I want to play around with it a bit more though. Potentially listen to the show with headphones and simultaneously dictate it?
That's a shame the first dictation hack didn't work. Have you tried the simultaneous dictation?
Also, reporting in that I'm making (admittedly slow) progress on the transcription for ep.13. I'm about half-way through so far and pushing commits as I make them. In case it's of any use to anyone in its current form, here it is: https://github.com/eliotsykes/webahead-transcripts/blob/master/_posts/transcripts/2012-01-12-013.html
If you want, submit what you've got so far as a pull request, and I'll push it to the live server. Or we can wait — up to you. I don't mind publishing half-done transcripts. I think even half can be useful, and the fact it's in progress only helps to let people know volunteers are doing this right now, and they can help too.
Submitting what's there so far sounds good, thanks, I'll aim for that before continuing transcribing. First I'll need to add some missing markup then it'll be ready for a pull request.
Pull request for first half of transcript is issue #27
@eliotsykes hey, got back to this. As you can see below, the simultaneous dictation works surprisingly well. For me at least it's definitely faster than transcribing by hand. To get this, I just mumbled into an integrated mic, so I speaking properly into an even halfway decent mic would probably yield even better results.

Hey, I'm noticing we still only have the first half of this transcript...
Hi Jen, Yeah, about that... this might be the nudge I need to get a few more minutes done.
I'll have a go and getting some more done in the next 2 days. If there's an urgent need for it and there are any volunteers who want to take it on please don't be shy to put up your hand!

Ok, I just pushed the last set of updates to the live (temp) server. And to the new website-in-progress. Thanks!
Just wanted to note that this is still almost done, but not quite: http://thewebahead.net/13
Transcript stops at 00:57:39 for a show that's 1:23:28.
I'm so sorry about this! Thanks for the nudge @jensimmons. I was listening to the show this week and got an awful pang of guilt about not finishing the transcript, this has been on my todo list for a long time and I just need to put aside the time. The new site is fantastic. I'll get this finished.
Up to 1:04:14, 0:17:41 to go!
Temporary home for transcript https://github.com/eliotsykes/webahead-transcripts/blob/master/episode-13.html
Yay! I just approved your Drupal account Eliot. Let me know if you have any troubles getting in. Someone else was finding a potential bug in the password reset system... so tell me if you need help.
Thanks Jen, got the email (an automated one from the CMS went to spam in case that's of use). I've not tried signing in yet, I will do in the next few days.
Episode 13 transcript up to 1:06:58, 15:02 to go
Up to 1:11:24. The free "Transcriptions" Mac app is making this a little more productive https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/transcriptions/id911974149?mt=12

Up to 1:20:57
Woo! Finished transcription. I'll have some time to put it in the CMS tomorrow! :+1:
Yay!
I just noticed your account didn't have the privileges to be able to add the transcript. I just fixed that — so you are all set.
Thanks @jensimmons! It's updated with the full transcript, asides, and potential quotes http://thewebahead.net/13
Excellent! Thanks Eliot. I just posted a quote to the episode page. It's great to know this episode is complete.
The 1st episode of The Web Ahead I listened to! If anyone has any transcription tips or software suggestions for Mac please share.
