I've just had a thought. Why don't we convert the page "[domain]/fr/blog/" to be the same format as the current guide-des-francais-a-londres page using a template approach.
It might not look exactly the same, and the icons accompanying the posts might have to go, or an automatic solution found for future posts. But it would let you keep adding lots of content without constantly editing that page (copying html blocks, editing fr/en.yaml etc.).

Got it, np.
Will keep an eye out for your new page. I think it can be frustrating until you figure out 'the hugo way' - then it seems very flexible and quick to do things - at least for me!
There were a few things I'd still like to change though, where the HTML site wasn't 100% using the benefits - like the blog index page.
Will add the footer translation when I get a sec (will add a new i18n variable and update it in the i18n folder files).
Also - you might prefer to try this if you don't like writing in vim: https://forestry.io/ - it's a kind of CMS that ties into git/hugo and auto re-builds the site. It's free for one user. I'm about to use this for my deploy process: http://www.andrewcodispoti.com/deploy-process/ as I've got my Vim set up with all sorts of goodies for quick writing.
Really cool tips, thanks Luke, i'm greatful
