Slime race brainstorm #290

On IRC we decided it's time for a new race. All suggestions valid! What are your thoughts?

My rough notes: Probably no weapons or armor Jewellery slot focused, like felids and octopodes Maybe amus and rings are interchangeable, since it's all just stored internally anyways? Can "spit" throwing weapons Good at praying obviously ;) Consume equipment off the ground to heal a bit. Can't tote it around though - it'll dissolve inside you. Jewellry doesn't dissolve cuz magic.

Or they could even be humanoid-shaped with more normal slots and semi-solid, like vine stalkers

Would be fun to be somewhat mutation-based, or at least able to have jiyva mutations naturally. Maybe saccing max hp for a mutation(or good mutation) on demand?

G0rg0 commented 8 years ago

I think they should be really formless and have some kind of acid attack (acid immunity as well).

Maybe they can be a bit different and be able to use multiple amulets rather than multiple rings?

It would be great if they had access to the Jivya mutation pool.

what if their equipment slots functioned entirely differently? Maybe they just have 5 slots, but they can be 5 armours or 5 rings, or whatever. So you can use item combos you couldn't normally use.

They would still have a wield and quiver slot. But everything else would be interchangeable.

5 slots, but they can be 5 armours or 5 rings, or whatever

You've looked at arti egos when messing with the +-SP stuff... how different are arti rings and armors and weapons, in like the bonuses they give - not counting AC, base dam, or enchantment of course.

Could pick a random brand from your weapons too, when you attack.

Should slimes be small or medium?

Or even... Big?

Normal red jelly tile (and change colors occasionally), or make use of this deprecated tile?

Maybe slime size gets bigger as it advances XL. Mostly for flavor, but it does affect dodging. Bigger size has more room for equipment. Maybe it starts with just 3 "slots", eventually getting up to 7?

I think using 5 plate armour or alike can be OP, that can give more AC than Gr in CPA has.

jeremygurr commented 8 years ago

the only things that stack are enchantments (+rF, etc). Base stats, like AC from armour, or weapon damage work differently. If the slime has more than one armour "equipped", when calculating AC, one armour is randomly chosen each time. Same with weapon. If there is more than one weapon inside, a random one is chosen for each strike.

I like that blue deprecated tile for a graphic.

I think the defining trait I want to build this race around is that it is the ultimate recycler. They have a use for all the crap that is normally littered all over the dungeon floor.

Djinn have an odd bug right now where they can memorize spells, but can't actually look at the book directly.

Which made me think of eating books.

So my idea is, slimes don't read books, they EAT books. When they memorize a spell, they eat the book, and gain one spell level for memorization. So a slime can memorize a total of ((Experience Level - 1) + (2 * Spellcasting) + number of devoured books)) levels of spells.

Which means they only get to pick one spell from each book... which means they're much more interested in the many overlapping and duplicated books lying all over the dungeon. Book starts give you a pre-memorized spell, so with a book start you'll have that one plus one spell from the book.

TBD: should they be able to eat a book for the spell level, without memorizing anything? Should they get a special exception to "You can memorise at most 20 spells"?

SleepySteel commented 8 years ago

I think the book eating idea is really cool- letting them eat a book without learning a spell sounds fair, or at the very least letting them eat a book with only spells that they have memorized. A race that breaks the 20 spell limit would be cool to see but not essential.
