I am not sure, XP and thus piety aptitude is a way to balance species.
why does piety gain have to match xp aptitude? Seems like low xp apt species (like mummy) ought to be able to gain piety just as fast as a human (with +2 exp apt). If we needed to be able to control that stat better, we could create a species specific aptitude for it. Up until now I didn't even know that a mummy gained piety much more slowly than a human. That's some serious spoilery.
XP aptitude controls how hard species is. If piety gain is not tired to the same thing, then we change difficulty species by taking a god (some gods are really strong and allow you just spectate monsters dying).
I can see it both ways, but it is very spoilery. I think there was a thread awhile ago about streamlining the piety-gain mechanism across all gods, but I can't remember the outcome of that.
Given that the different races have big differences in XP gain, it would be nice if piety gain was completely separate.
