How to get LaTeX up and running on Ubuntu? #1

I installed TeXLive through the Syntaptic package manager. However, unlike Miktex, packages are not automatically downloaded and installed as required.

How can I add additional packages that I need?

Synaptic
- I went back into the Synaptic package manager and searched for "texlive" and added a number of additional packages.
- This included:
- texlive-latex-base
- texlive-pictures
- texlive-pstricks
- texlive-common
- texlive-latex-recommended
- texlive-bibtex-extra: this added support for apacite
- texlive-math-extra: this added amstex

I still experience occasional issues because I don't have the latest version of a package or I'm lacking some niche packages.
