Go to the self test where you can set the game options. Choose Free Play, Medium Diff, and then cycle through the options for Number of lives. If you move right you get one set of values, If you move left you get a different set of values. I can even choose 0 lives. When you commit the changes it seems to select 3 lives though.
Also of note. For all options (other than the xlives) if you roll right it will loop through the available settings, if you roll left it stops at the "lowest" setting.
