So I ended up changing the overall user interface to a tabbed design because I thought that I could change the way things are loaded and increase performance, and we had talked about changing to a tabbed design before. In the end, it didn't really improve performance much if at all. I'll keep looking into other changes to make to improve performance... but I like the tabs.
