Merged Ideas (1) XLS logo for exports in Avention 2 Comments » Posted by gam_patel to Avention on 10/15/2014 6:51 AM https://na4.salesforce.com/ideas/viewIdea.apexp?id=08760000000GyMv

Where export to Excel is availble in Avention E.g. Corporate family, it would be more user friendly to change the 'Arrow logo' to an 'Excel file OR XLS' logo so it's clearer that it's the 'Export to Excel' button. Like wise with PDF's.

Which customer(s) made this suggestion? All What customer impact would this have? This would make it clearer for users. Avoids any confusion.

I have had the request from clients/ for the ease of use. Would be extremely helpful to have it! Edit

Agreed. Icons are more intuitive and easily reconnizable versus having to find in a dropdown or arrow icon at the top of the pags (as is the case with corp family report)

kdetw 10/27/2014 10:48 AM What if we leave it in the same location but rename it "Actions" like it is on the Lists view? The rationale for it's current position is that ultimately there will be other actions underneath that may not be specific to the report being viewed (i.e, Add to, etc.).

eeich 10/27/2014 10:55 AM I do like keeping it a consistent name, I'd say that is more important to me than location. I would still say make it bigger and add some sort of attention catching image. Like Edit | Del
christine.quinn 10/27/2014 11:00 AM I think "Actions" is still not obvious - users will need to be trained to know what "Actions" means (The application continues to require too much training to be productive). The location is also too far away from the report itself - it is not easy to find and is not intuitive to look up in the corner above the map. Like Edit | Del
dan.styklunas 10/27/2014 11:06 AM First of all, I am not sure you are referring to the same specific function. Steve's idea was to move the arrow to export a report to excel -- your image above shows a saved smart list.

I am ok conceptually with keeping an ACTIONS menu consolidated, so all functions can be done from there. But I do not think the word "Actions" is intuitive at all. I have yet to have a demo where a customer wants to do something (save a list, add/delete something, export a list) and goes to Actions. They ask what to do next or where they go to do it. I would prefer visual cues that a customer might recognize. In this case, an Excel icon. Or a Disk/Save icon. A forward pointing arrow is not intutive either. Like Edit | Del
kdetw 10/27/2014 11:11 AM I am referring to the same specific function, Dan, just wondering if putting the word "Actions" in place of the graphic would help. Underneath the Actions label would be all the actions users can take from that screen - Export to Excel, Export to PDF, Add to List, etc. There are a host of activities users might want to do from a company record that we will eventually be addressing, so we're worried about "icon creep" and having a separate icon for each potential action, versus consolidating them all under a drop-down. SNoel 10/27/2014 11:29 AM I still like the idea of more icons versus text in a dropdown menu.....show an printer icon to print, excel icon to export to excel, a pdf link to create a PDF, a disc icon to Save as a Static List, a disc icon with a bolt to Save as a Smartlist etc......fewer dropdowns and more visual. the iPhone and other successful products have very few menus and more visual icons. The less a user has to think on where to locate functionality, the better the experience. Like Edit | Del
jakub.malobecki 10/27/2014 11:37 AM I agree with a drop-down feature. I would like everyone to keep in mind that once a customer has the tool in their hands and is using it regulary, it will no longer be an issue of 'where do I go now to do something with this record'. I would prefer the placing to be directly to the right of the name/title of the current information being viewed (i.e. 'Annual Income (Standardized)' or 'SWOT Analysis')

***I'm okay with 'Actions' but it should stand out, (i.e. style, font size, CAPS, red color font instead of blue like other commands). A suggestion other than 'ACTIONS' might be 'OPTIONS'. Like Edit | Del
chirag.patel 10/27/2014 11:55 AM I think there should be a toolbar section at the top and within that toolbar section should be all the available icons (e.g. an XLS icon for download to Excel, and pdf icon for download to PDF) that apply to each page. That way the client knows where to go for specific 'actions' or 'options'. It makes sense for things to be kept standardised - i.e. users know that these types of options would typically be at the top of the page, so this should be obvious - BUT, this also needs to stand out more, so having visual icons will help to achieve this.

I also agree that having icons for donwloads for xls or pdf next to line items (e.g. specific reports, SWOT reports etc.) is also a good idea. It helps make the layout more intuitive and improves usability. Like Edit | Del

Definitely bigger and more obvious for users to easily export. Like Edit | Del

Why are we creating custom icons? What's wrong with the industry standard icons that are already out there? I like Chirag's idea of an icon tool bar (looks much more industry-standard). As is, it's unclear what the icon button even does? When I hover over it, I get nothing. When I hover over the icons immediately to the right of that export icon, it tells me what those buttons do (i.e., "Toggle pin status" & "Toggle default pin status for new users" - whatever that means). If this is an icon/button to export a report to an Excel spreadsheet (which I now see once I click on this icon), why not just use the green icon that thousands of other programs use to indicate Export to Excel? Doug.....it wasn't my intent to use "custom" icons. Sorry if this was not clear. Just general industry standard icons are fine. The ones I mentioned as examples are industry standards in my mind (printer pdf, excel) I only made reference to the smartlist save to distinguish is from a static list. The more visual the better. chris.black 10/28/2014 10:34 AM The placement by the PIN option makes sense to me since that panel is locked while scrolling and always visible, but I'm in agreement with having an icon always visible instead of a drop-down of options. Like Edit | Del

I agree with Steve, Chris, Dan and others - standard visual Icons would be best. They give visual direction and require no training. We are spending too much time training users - even something that may seem simple like explaining what the Actions drop down does takes time and it is not necessary when you can use visual icons. We should strive to deliver a solution that requires very little if any training at all! Like·1 like Edit | Del

In my opinion, the only solution is visual icons. It is the most intuitive and simple approach that users would apprecite. Like·1 like
