I suggest adding the ability for the player to use the blue item, giving some buffs (strength, speed, etc...) as well as some de-buffs (weakness, slowness, etc...) when it wears off. A system could also be made where the player depends on the blue item more, like increasingly high de-buffs and lower and lower buffs. Maybe the level at which this happens could be determined by the color of the item.
