List of suggestions #9

The following would be useful to have in the beta:

- the log should contain more information:
  - date/time
  - sacd-ripper version
  - output format (ISO, mch DSDIFF (DSD), etc.)
- the log should reside inside the new directory (in order not to be
overwritten)
- different directories should be created to distinguish at least between
stereo and surround output (some folks may want to have both and at the moment
a first set of files is overwritten by a second)

Maybe later it would also be possible to have:

- a different (customized?) naming scheme (e.g. I would prefer to have only the
title in the file name, not the artist; also I think it would be best to have a
directory "artist" with subdirectorie(s) "album")
- storage to network, so we don't have to fumble around with usb all the time

Thanks for suggestions! Everything you mention in your suggestions I'll do
before the beta, it's all minor.. All errors are currently logged, I do not
have heaps of LOG_NOTICE messages, but I'll add the most important ones.

> - a different (customized?) naming scheme (e.g. I would prefer to have only
> the title in the file name, not the artist; also I think it would be best
> to have a directory "artist" with subdirectorie(s) "album")

It's currently not configurable but it's easy to change, I have a special form
of "printf" for that.. But the main ripping screen should probably be replaced
with something proper so the user can change/save options, etc.. any suggestion
is welcome!

> - storage to network, so we don't have to fumble around with usb all the time
Pushing and storing on NFS/SAMBA is possible but difficult to get right.
Turning SACD-Ripper into a HTTP server where you can download the tracks from
is the 'easiest'. What are your suggestions? Maybe we should vote on this..

Personally I would prefer the first, because I wouldn't have to attach a usb
hd, anymore. Though I have no idea how to do this on a PS3, I was hoping it was
as easy as mapping a network drive in windows or performing a mount in linux...
Of course the second would also be very helpful.

Another thing, keyboard control would be nice. I can't find the "exit" key or
the "options" key. But other than that it seems more user-friendly to control
the app via keyboard, at least as soon as filnames etc. can be typed in, too.

About the naming scheme:
Do you by any chance now the CD ripping program "exact audio copy"?
I find this quite convenient. There is a default "create filenames
automatically". With this it will create an artist folder and album folders
inside containing the tracks. There are also advanced options, that one
typically configures only once, where e.g. the composition of the filenames can
be configured.

Gave it a try and it worked!

Here are questions and a wishlist:
- an option to encode to flac (or selectable lossless codecs like apple
lossless) directly would be very handy, including choosing options for sampling
frequency (88/96/176/192 kHz @24bit). Including filling the appropriate
tag-fields...
- writing to a network share would be great, but only, when this is easily
configurable (somehow graphically browse the network and choose an output
directory - please think of the normal user!). Or auto-creating some sort of
folder on the PS3's HD, that can be accessed via the network and mounted as a
network folder on a windows computer.
- a GUI, where I can select, what tracks to rip and in which format (maybe even
consecutively, both in stereo and multichannel)
- an option like "rip all tracks in both stereo and multichannel".

Questions:

- how "stable" and "good" is this alpha in terms of sound-quality? I am not
sure how to put it right, but are there any codecs involved, or (like with
CD-ripping) any error-corrections, that could alter the quality of the file or
the in any way? (hint: look how elaborately dbpoweramp or EAC try to rip a CD
bitperfectly).
- what's the difference between the downloads/programs "Sacd-Ripper" and
"Sacd-Ripper (geohot CFW)"?
- What's the difference between the keys I found on the net (one was a
zip-file, one a tar.gz and claimed to be "3.60") Does ot make any difference,
which ones to use?

Great piece of software, that you got going there, keep up the work!

Thank you for your suggestions.

>- how "stable" and "good" is this alpha in terms of sound-quality?
Ripping a CD is higher science.. SACD ripping is basically the raw reading of a
data disc. The Blu-Ray drive will do the error correction and the re-reading of
sectors it couldn't read. There is no higher science involved until the moment
you start converting DSD to PCM.

> what's the difference between the downloads/programs "Sacd-Ripper" and
"Sacd-Ripper (geohot CFW)"?
For the OtherOS++ firmware there is no difference, both run the same.

>- What's the difference between the keys I found on the net (one was a
zip-file, one a tar.gz and claimed to be "3.60") Does ot make any difference,

You need the 3.55 keys as the OtherOS++ version will be 3.55 as well.

oooops, I did put both the 3.55 and the 3.60 files in the root of the
USB-drive, there were three 3.55-files or so, that have been overwritten by
3.60.
Extraction still works, anything I should do now to REALLY get all 3.55 on the
PS3 - what could happen in the worst case with my current installation?

Having had one issue so far, an error "8002B301" with the SACD "Pieter
Wispelwey, Tchaikovsky/Saint-Saëns/Bruch", Channel Classics CCS SA 16501.
The SACD plays fine in the PS3, all layers are recognized, all tracks play.
Just the ripper refuses the disc.
Any idea, why?

Btw.: is there a way to a.) deinstall the ripper and b.) to completely reset
the PS3, so that no custom installations are there anymore - something like a
clean&fresh reinstall of the Otheros++ ?

i'm not sure for what you're talking about, but i'm getting HD 1080i output

to connect the PS3 to old 21" CRT monitor, which gives me excellent performance.

Good suggestions, I agree.
With the direct-to-flac rip functionality it would then also be desirable to
prevent/remove the clicks (issue 6).

Please consider possibility to convert directly from stereo or multi-ch SACD
zones to DSD_DISC folder. In this case PS3-compatible discs can be developed.

I wish SACD compatible PS3 could play SACD-R with sacd-ripper.

Original comment by gr...@index.hu on 3 Aug 2011 at 7:15

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
i believe that's not simple or maybe i should say i think it's even impossible,
because BD drive of PS3 can't authenticate SACD-R disc and thus no PS3
application can read it. if you want to playback DSD audio on PS3 it's better
to learn how to make DSD discs: http://www.ps3sacd.com/dsddiscguide.html - it's
not hard at all, but as far as i know it's limited to stereo playback only even
that sacd-ripper can make both stereo and multi-channel DSF files for DSD disc
that PS3 will recognize and play, but multi-channel DSF files will be played as
stereo - once again i'm not sure about the stereo limitation and someone else
maybe can confirm or deny it or you can just test.

Original comment by sheridan...@hotmail.com on 3 Aug 2011 at 12:34

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
There is no stereo limitatation for mch DSD discs on SACD compatible PS3 for
sure :-) However, creating mch DSD disc is much more inconvenient than playing
straight SACD-R.

'PS3 can't authenticate SACD-R disc and thus no PS3 application can read it'
That's not quite true because sacd-ripper can access and rip SACD-R as foobar
sacd plugin (which afaik contains codes from sacd-ripper) can access and play
SACD-R iso.

"That's not quite true because sacd-ripper can access and rip SACD-R as foobar

it's not about what sacd-ripper code can do, but about if BD drive on PS3 will
allow you to read SACD-R disc - so are you saying sacd-ripper can rip SACD-R
disc on your PS3? what i'm trying to say that sacd-ripper can't overcome
limitations of the BD drive hardware on PS3 and its firmware.

Original comment by sheridan...@hotmail.com on 3 Aug 2011 at 2:15

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Yes, sacd-ripper can rip SACD-R disc on SACD compatible PS3 indeed. Try it!
This is the only way I know to copy an SACD-R disc having no UDF. So
sacd-ripper can access the DSD/DST audio on SACD-R. The question is if it is
possible to improve the ripper for SACD-R playing on PS3. And at this point you
may be right, there might be such hw/sw limitations, restrictions which cannot
be broken or circumvented.

When ripping to an iso it appears the iso-name is based on the album title.

I would like to suggest to use the disc title instead, because when an album
consists of multiple discs, the album title will be the same for all discs but
the disc titles usually are different.

When using the album title, rips from subsequent discs get overwritten, so now
I have to take the USB-stick, run to my computer ( :-) ), rename the iso-file,
run back again and continue ripping the next disc.

You can imagine what happens when ripping a 12-cd CD-box. :-()

Does this correction is strict exact or interpolate like on CD audio ?

Does SACD encryption and compression may work if such inexact sequance or gap ?

SACD is using same technology for recording as DVD with advanced protection -
if the copy finish successfully there is no way to get errors - if there is
error during the reading then the Blu-Ray drive will refuse to copy the data.
also, most SACD discs use DST encoding, which is loss-less compression and if
there is an error then you won't be able to decode the DST too. i don't know
how to explain it - but in short there is no interpolation - the read data are
1:1 as what they were before encrypted and recorded to the SACD.

Original comment by sheridan...@hotmail.com on 8 Aug 2011 at 8:41

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
or maybe i should put it this way - when you watch DVD movie - every time you
read the disc you watch the same movie and it's the same with SACD - quality
doesn't depend on the backup process - data are read as they are and if there
is error then you simple want be able to read the data.

Congratulations. Excellent piece of software.
My suggestion is to implement decoding DST to DSD from file. Right now it's
only possible with ISO file, but I want to archive only stereo DST file.

I can't find software to do decoding DST to DSD (usable for further
processing). Your algorithm works well, so I think it will be easy to implement
input from DFF(DST) file.

Thanks

I would like to request direct-to-flac output by batching the saracon converter.
The converter should be batched in such a way that clicks at beginning and end
of tracks are avoided, see issues 6 and 40.

Here is a script created by zcftr29 for an automated iso -> flac conversion
with Saracon. The script uses an older version of sacd_extract. There could be
newer scripts but I don't aware of them because I'm not so interested in
high-throughput SACD-R -> flac conversion.

With (385?) the daemon version with 5 seconds to decide which mode 'Networked'
or not. This 5 seconds is too short a time!
Please extend the time, so we (especially new users) have time to read fully
the options offered, understand what they mean and reach a decision.

I have found there is no way back to make this choice after the 5 seconds, once
the default 'Networked mode' has been implemented. The only way back is to exit
SACD-Ripper and restart it again. (Also how does one elegantly exit
SACD-Ripper, other than turn off the PS3?)
If we have 10 even 20 seconds to decide surely this would not slow down those
that are already decided and used to operating SACD-Ripper, they will have made
their selection, before (eg)20 seconds is up and the default mode implemented.

Hi... zcftr29 here - author of the above-mentioned script

I am currently working on version 0.4 to deal with a few issues raised by other
users and add some extra features. Currently, the process involves extracting
individual tracks to dff - running foobar/DR meter to find the peak tracks -
and then converting these peak tracks (usually only one or two) in Saracon with
0dB gain to calculate the correct gain to apply when converting the EM. This
requires extracting the contents of the ISO twice. I am testing out an
alternative approach - running the DR meter directly on the ISO in foobar
first. Would it be possible to add a feature to SACD_Extract so that only
selected tracks are extracted from the ISO for the first pass. This would
hopefully speed up the conversion process.

Great program, I use sacd_extract all the time to rip out dff for my Oppo 103,
thanks.

Quick request that should be easy. If the exported file name is to long, based
on how it was ripped to iso, then sacd_extract just drops out to "we are done",
and does not extract the rest of the files. I can get by this by moving the iso
down to the root level of a drive and rename the dir to a single letter, then
sacd_extract can properly write out the long file name. SO my suggestion is
this, if you find you are going to exceed the file name limit on a file to
export, then just auto truncate the file name and export it. You could then
drop a message that some filenames were truncated, and "we are done"! Thanks!!!

Dear Mr_Wicked,

I wish you could create a tool which can convert multichannel DSF files to DFF
and vice versa.

Original comment by gr...@index.hu on 2 Jan 2014 at 10:26

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Mr_Wicked,

I'm using SACD Ripper version 0.37, which is the latest I can find. I recently
encountered two problems (with the same SACD) that I would appreciate having
fixed.

In case it's relevant, the SACD is Diana Krall - When I look in your eyes,
Verve 440 065 374-2, which contains BOTH SACD Stereo and SACD Surround Sound
areas.

The stereo area contains 13 tracks and the surround area only the first 12
tracks. The opening screen of SACD Ripper correctly identifies both areas,
but the 'O' button to select one or the other has been disabled in this
version, so I can't select the stereo area for ripping.

It would be nice to have the various output options re-enabled, at the very
least a choice of 2ch or Mch ISO output.

The second problem is a known one from way back - the 'blind rip' problem,
where SACD Ripper fails to show the progress bars once started, and effectively
'freezes' the PS3, though it *does* complete the ripping successfully. One has
to watch the activity indicator of the USB stick to confirm when it has
finished, then force a reboot of the PS3 to do anything more.

Any chance of looking at that issue too?

I really appreciate the work you have put into this program, and hope that it
can be further debugged and not become a lame orphan.

Regards,
Daniel (Australia)
