warning: incompatible with old versions of GCC #13

I encountered several perplexing problems when compiling this code with version 7.5.0 of gcc/g++. Those problems seem to have gone away since upgrading to version 9.3.0. If you are using an older version of the GCC compiler, please upgrade it or install CLANG.
