In our IoT workshop, we had some issues with the most recent versions of the Silicon Labs serial driver for Mac. To avoid people getting stuck on this, we should provide an alternative. Some ideas:
A VirtualBox Linux VM with the software pre-installed. If we give the VM access to the USB port, the serial connection should, in theory, work automagically.
A headless Raspberry Pi connected to the laptop via ethernet. There are variousguides on the internet on how to get this to work.
Provide a usb stick with a live Ubuntu image. The student would then use the USB stick as the boot device (note that, if they have a company provided laptop, this functionality may be disabled).
This will also solve the "no detailed instructions for Windows" problem as well!
