What about GitLab ?
Gitlab is one alternative. Another alternative is to look for something that is provided by a foundation, not a commercial entity. A third option is to host it myself.
Framasoft, a French non-profit organisation, hosts their own GitLab instance called Framagit.
Such a professional attitude!
I have used Microsoft products since Microsoft Basic for CP/M, around 30 years ago. My company was a reseller for Microsoft during the PC Boom. The company I started back then is still a Microsoft reseller, and they develop software for the Microsoft platform for local SMB's. I know Microsoft better than most.
jgaa I can create an account for you on my gitea instance if you like. It's been up since 2016 and I don't plan to close it any time soon. However I don't accept subscriptions and server is not configured to send emails. That'll make it a problem if users want to open new issues or comment or even make pull requests, at least until they properly implement federation. Framasoft sounds like a solid alternative to me.
Github is being aquired by Microsoft. This project will not be hosted by Microsoft. Everything Microsoft touches turns into dirt.
