Not necessarily needed to be pulled, but:

fixes to make work with Python 2.5
- made 'settings' passed to thread, instead of global (global not supported by 2.5)
- made thread store local copy of settings, and refer to it
- use simplejson (comes with 2.6 onwards)
- use psyco if available (not needed, but worth a shot)
