A game is strategy-proof if an agent does not fare worse if he is truthful, regardless of what the other agents do. For example, a voting process between two alternatives is strategy-proof, if I have a preference for one alternative, it's always best for me to vote that alternative. In a voting with three alternatives, for example elections in america with democrats, republicans and a small independent party, and my favorite is the independent party, it can still be better for me to vote for the Democrats just to make sure the republicans don't win because the independent party will probably loose anyways.
Another fundamental paper on game theory and the issue of acting trustworthy in a "game".
