Potentially good. Just started watching overview video here on using it for remote learning. Will be curious to see their 'perusall' type option.

Pros and Cons thus far (I'll return to re-edit):

Pros

Cons

Tophat 'Page' allows one to build scrollable pages with embedded videos and questions.

If wanted to use with chapters of an open source textbook like Core Econ one would have to either just paste to an external link or, if one wanted to assign just sections at a time, paste the content into a Tophat 'Page.'

It is simpler and uncluttered compared to Blackboard but how much value added?

Putting the links into this thread.

Here is the page you can share with your department which goes over the enhancements for this fall:

That is a big issue in my mind.  Add to $30 as the base, the cost of Moblab and it's up to $55.  For the student at CUNY, BB is free and Gradescope and Perusall. Maybe there's a way to license Moblab so that it is free to students - might be difficult to get students to pay $25 for an app that is "just" about some experiments.

Pros
  • Modern look and feel

  • Relatively uncluttered and easy to navigate

  • all on one platform (e.g. slides presented in class are same slides they see posted

  • built-in student-polling system (e.g. can place questions in between slides for in class use)

  • Can build questions into a 'Page' of content.

  • relatively cheap at $30 (w/o textbook)

    Cons

  • No clear way to blast out announcements... will need to still use BB for that.

  • No evidence of a tool like Perusall (you can have discussion threads but do not link back to text as perusall does... of course one could potentially embed perusall) -No question banks

Old school copy to Jonathan in case it's not getting archived on the list -- some late night responses from Tophat:

this video exemplifies the Microeconomics book and how Virtual Classroom plays out:

Does this help?

I said yes because that's what we really need -- fast paced videos going through steps.  I don't need an hour to figure out whether it can be helpful or not.  So I asked for more such videos.

How to build an online course with Top Hat: https://www.loom.com/share/b73eb7c12377498facb55152cb7bd375 https://t.tophat.com/t/9954/c/c7495a9c-7cc5-4690-aa40-f1e46a170bb1/NB2HI4DTHIXS653XO4XGY33PNUXGG33NF5ZWQYLSMUXWENZTMVRDOYZRGIZTONZUHE4GMYLDMI2TKMJVGJRWEN3CMQZTONI=/www-loom-com-share-b73eb7c12377498facb55152cb7bd375

How to create a 50 question test in under 2 minutes: https://tophat-1.wistia.com/medias/b0ehkritkl https://t.tophat.com/t/9954/c/c7495a9c-7cc5-4690-aa40-f1e46a170bb1/NB2HI4DTHIXS65DPOBUGC5BNGEXHO2LTORUWCLTDN5WS63LFMRUWC4ZPMIYGK2DLOJUXI23M/tophat-1-wistia-com-medias-b0ehkritkl

And vis-a-vis Jonathan's cons:

/No clear way to blast out announcements... will need to still use BB for that/     - It's not on our website, but we'll go over Slate and what that means around Top Hat/announcements/etc (but I want you to imagine something like MS Teams, Slack, MSN Messenger...) /No evidence of a tool like Perusall (you can have discussion threads but do not link back to text as perusall does... of course - one could potentially embed perusall)/     We can go over this easily re: discussions within text. I'd like to dive deeper into Perusall but I'm sure this is easily replicable. /No question banks/     - negative, tons of question banks!! the book's been updated a couple times with even more since you last saw it.

I listened to a couple webinar demos  (at double speed, from here or here I think) and skimmed the ones you shared on github.

I'm now quite inclined to adopt in the Fall. They just seem very responsive, the Tophat platform is flexible to incorporate cutting edge technology in pretty inventive ways, and it's 1/4th the price for students compared to Cengage. A few last parting on how I might implement things:

dgolbe commented 4 years ago

(If I've already posted the first bit of this-- oops. I find Github difficult to navigate. Anyway, here's my suggestion)

Suppose we create a list of things we would like to accomplish with technology in the fall? If we know of a tool that can accomplish that, great. Then we can give that list to Shiao-Chun to see if she has suggestions about how to accomplish it within the framework of tools already incorporated in Blackboard or otherwise available at Hunter. I think there's value to students to staying within the platforms they already use, because the fall also promises to be fraught with anxiety, though hopefully at a reduced level.

Here's a start of such a list:

I would move the discussion to the department Blackboard page. We should add all fall instructors to that soon. We are certainly not going to get a wide group on Github.

mbaker21231 commented 4 years ago

Hi everyone -

So, I have taken a look and like the platform as well. Maybe we could come up with a list of readings or topics we need covered and see how close that gets us to having a 100 text. Also, we might be able to make our own content without too much difficulty as needed.

When would we need to pull the trigger on switching to tophat in the fall? I looked at the videos Jonathan linked and also liked the look and feel.

jhconning commented 4 years ago

Good ideas @dgolbe. . I'll reply here now but you're right that we should move to BB discussion to expand the audience (I can cut and paste later). I prefer Github for a variety of reasons (e.g. Wiki and other content in markdown and synced to my drive; ) but it's not for everyone.

You raise the question of how much can be achieved within Blackboard. Before I saw Tophat I was thinking about just doing things w/ Blackboard.

That said I do think TopHat is just more polished, seamless and modern compared to Blackboard. There are lots of things you can do in TopHat easily and 'on the fly'. For example, while you can recreate elements of the feel of a TopHat page via a BB module, in Tophat you can just drag and drop to move things around quickly (stuff that would have taken much longer and more subject to error on BB). Also, very importantly, at least for me the Blackboard phone app seems limited and compared to the tophat app. Whenever I try to look at content via the Blackboard app on my phone the available content seems to be an (each time different) random sample of my actual content on the proper site. Sometimes I can see my own course content, but usually note, sometimes the Economics and Accounting Organization site, but at other times all I can see is something about a COACHE survey and a few other things.

Responses to Devra's list:

Have students discuss articles (Perusal, Tophat?) If Perusall could be setup as a BB 'Tool Provider' it would be a one-click to launch perusall from BB but that's something CUNY has to enable.

Same for Gradescope. Anything to limit the total number of login ids students need, and the number of gradebooks I need to fuzzy merge.

Embed polls/quizzes in asynch lectures You can have these after (or in between) videos in both Tophat and Blackboard.

Provide a substitute for an expansive whiteboard, so that you could have a long question and answer on display at once, so students can refer back to the beginning as you/they solve the problem (Sangeeta's need, I think.)

Something different than allowing them to rewind the video?

dgolbe commented 4 years ago

No contest: BB is way clunkier than any alternative I've ever seen. Possibly because CUNY always seems to be behind by a generation. It's only virtues are price, familiarity to students and that their other classes are more likely to be on BB. I have not investigated, but Ken & Arabella are both Canvas fans/users.
