Router "hijacking" DNS requests #90

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Setting OpenDNS manually on PC as DNS (208.67.222.222 etc.)
2. Leave router at default in PPPoE mode (getting DNS dynamically from ISP)
3. Go to http:\\www.opendns.com\welcome

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Should see a page saying PC is using OpenDNS which would then ensure that
blocking of websites etc. is in place. Instead it would appear that the router
is sending all DNS requests to the DNS servers noted in the WAN interface i.e.
those dynamically obtained from ISP. OpenDNS check page shows no DNS requests
going to thier servers.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

Vigor 2130/Firmware 1.5.2/Windows 7

Please provide any additional information below.

This also happens when allowing the PC to get the DNS settings from the router
by setting "Force DNS Manual". In this case it works OK for a while then when
ISP dynamic IP changes, all DNS traffic appears to be routed to their servers
(defined in the WAN interface section of the online status page) and not the
servers defined in the LAN section.

Should have added that I have used another router and this operates as expected
- setting OpenDNS on the PC and going to http:\\www.opendns.com\welcome shows
that DNS requests are going to the correct server.

The same problem exists regardless of the DNS set on the PC (could be Google
8.8.8.8) - requests are routed to the ISP server!

Have filled the info in the router - see under additional info in first post.
There is no option in pppoe setup to manually enter DNS, it has to be done with
the Force DNS Manual option which isn't reliable. Also, setting manually on a
PC should also work. I should be able to bypass whatever is set on the router
by using a manual config on the PC - the router shouldn't be rerouting to
another server.

Please check the configuration in 'CSM >> URL Content Filter'. And make sure
that the checkbox 'HTTPS' in Host Filters are unchecked.
